We now have less than a month to go to the conference. Things are getting quite hectic with the conference committee. We are still waiting on about 70% of the confirmed speakers to provide material for the proceedings; at this rate they should be ready by Christmas, a bit like Perl 6.

We have started to add the abstract details to the confirmed talks page and we will be adding details of some more talks once the speakers confirm their attendance. There are three longer conference sessions planned with multiple speakers. The first of these is a session which Marty has fondly named "WWW Smackdown" where the speakers will be talking on various web development issues. The second of these is a session on essential CPAN modules and the third is a session on ~/bin scripts.

We have been looking at stats for the wiki and have discovered that Mark Fowler is the most popular person followed by Barbie and then Mock! 26.9% of the people accessing the site are using Linux and the most popular browser is Firefox with 33%. Bring on the geeks!

A few people have asked us about their safety in Belfast. Our answer might be surprising: Northern Ireland has one of the lowest crime rates among industrialised countries.

One report based on the International Crime Victim Survey said:

The ICVS allows an overall measure of victimisation which is the percentage of people victimised once or more in the previous year by any of the eleven crimes covered by the survey. This prevalence measure is a simple but robust indicator of overall proneness to crime. The countries fall into three bands.

Above 24% (victim of any crime in 1999): Australia, England and Wales, the Netherlands and Sweden

20%-24%: Canada, Scotland, Denmark, Poland, Belgium, France, and USA

Under 20%: Finland, Catalonia (Spain), Switzerland, Portugal, Japan and Northern Ireland.

From the results of the ICVS it seems that Japan is the only industrialised country safer than Northern Ireland. So YAPC in Belfast will be the safest YAPC ever!
